An Amateur Lawyer

I call myself an "Amateur Lawyer" since I haven't really plunge into the traditional definition of practice of law - before Cayetano v. Monsod was decided by the Supreme Court.

Yes, I am thinking of really going into practice in the months ahead after I comply with the requisites for court practice. (Refer to previous blog post:Daye on the Private Practice of Law)

Yes, I envy my law school classmates who actually have tried litigation and proudly can say they have been scolded by the judge for being an amateur.

Yes, like some who didn't have yet the passion for litigation, I also fear that my passion to litigate is not yet enough. Yes, lawyers can be coward too. Who wouldn't be if you know that "justice" is the game you are playing with? Who wouldn't fear getting an acquittal for the guilty and a conviction for an innocent client? Who wouldn't caution from the fact that the outcome of your one case could mean the everything to your client?

Yes, I am an amateur lawyer. I never have appeared in court as a counsel of record. I've done pleadings and other legal documents but I can never claim they are mine as "superiors" was the one who signed them for me.

I am an Amateur Lawyer and I am proud of being one.

Quoting from June 28 of the Our Daily Bread:

"The word amateur has been redefined over the years and has lost the luster of its original meaning. The English word comes from the Latin word "Amore", which means "to love." An amateur is someone who does something simply for the love of it.

In today's way of thinking, receiving payment moves you into a "higher" category - that of a professional. The reasoning is that if someone is willing to pay for your service, you must be really good. An amateur, therefore, is considered to have less skill or talent."

How can an analogy be made from doing something for the love of it yet doing it because you have less skill or talent?

I am Daye, an Amateur lawyer. I am soon leaving a financially rewarding job for the "love of the practice of law" and I could be less skilled than those who have been in the practice for years but I am certain I want to remain an Amateur lawyer, who does the practice of law for the love of it, even after several years I become more skilled and talented in court.

overtime, the word really lost its true identity..
and even if the word already changed its meaning, you are dearly loved because of the things you've done not only to your friends but also to the future of this world.
We don't care, we just love you..

All I can really say after reading this blog post of your Ma'am is AJA Ma'am Daye!!! How would you be so willing and dedicated in acquiring greater skill and talent if you don't have a passion and love for it? So Ma'am Daye's love and passion in the practice of law will certainly make her a great lawyer. i'm wishing all the best for you Ma'am!!! and God will always be by your side...
